Dear
friend,
Will you join us in Antwerp to celebrate African Art with a drink and see our
last acquisitions? Among them I have a few Madagascan statues, a Lega statue, a
Dan mask, etc... A few Antwerp African art dealers are also welcoming you in
town and you can also visit the Ethnographical Museum.
Antwerp is a city and region with worlds of diversity: from trendy South to
working-class Borgerhout, from busy urban centre to nearly virginal outlying
areas in the province. Antwerp likes to consider itself a metropolis and has
exerted a tremendous magnetism for centuries. The encounter between people and
cultures in Antwerp has yielded the city and the province a significant
heritage.

A quite unusual ivory figure. I bought this one at auction
in London. I did not agree with the Congo attribution from the catalogue. In
the discussion group people and from discussions with people who visited me
in Antwerp I got three different possible attributions. If you have an image
from a similar Ivory I would love to see it and her your attribution .
Could be: Tsogho/Vuvi (2 people), or Sudan, likely
Bongo given the eyebrowsand nose, but the ring/dot decorations can also
perhaps link it to Dinka or Toposa (2 people), or Lega (2 people), or
Tembo Piece, Eastern DRCongo, Tembo arts are rare (1 person).
The helmet shaped coiffure incised with minute dot and
circle motifs, applied with black pigment, the oval face with arched brows,
framing eyes, with each pupil composed of a double disc, the angular arms
held to the sides of the heavily-built torso, the sex with recessed aperture,
standing on stocky flexed legs, 22.5cm. high. one foot repaired
