Zande ivory
Figure of a woman, carved from a single piece of ivory. From the
Uele region, this fine and quite Zande ivory will make a nice addition to
your collection.
I bought it a few years ago from a small private collection, and sold it to a
private Dutch collector then, asking me to warn me the day he would like to sell
it back. He did so and I was glad to buy it back. What is interesting to this
ivory is the fact it has two pairs of eyes . This has probably a mystic
explanation, like looking in the spirits world, or in the future. see a closer
image of the face below this page.
From the Azande you usually see ivory horns, and basketry, complete ivory
figures are quite seldom.
H= 20,5 cm, one of the foots has been
broken and glued again as you can see on the image if you look closely.

As you can see on the close up above, this ivory has been cut in a natural
way, no signs of machinery tools. Also when you see it in real it has a natural
white patina, with some darker zones.
Although
no 100% cultural attribution is given, the style of the object suggests that it
is most probably Zande
