Old Baule carving ex Rabut collection

A Wenge wood  Baule spirit spouse collected in the early 40's- Blolo Bla from the well known Paul Rabut collection , with a hands to the belly, an enlarged head with sensitive expression and a tripartite coiffure.  Wearing a tooth and glass beads necklace and beaded anklet .

The figure has wonderful old patina.

 15" 3/4 inch , 40 cm

Material: made in the quite seldom Wenge wood. Beads and small animal tooth, scarifications in the neck., 3 etiquettes with numbers under the base, probably from previous collectors and/or auction houses :

The provenance of this fine Baule figure with some fine carvings (look at details of the mouth, and hands) is ex Paul Rabut collection, there was an article about him few years ago in tribal arts magazine (click blue link to subscribe)

in this article I discovered that Paul Rabut did his first acquisition in 1945, an that many of his pieces came from Dr.Harley and had the luck to be be in New York (where he worked as an illustrator) during the 50's and had contacts with all the big names in the African Art world in that time.

Rabut, Paul (1914-1983) & Peggy

       Coll. Westport-Connecticut, illustrator & designer by profession. African, Oceanic & American Northwest Coast Art. Paul purchased his first piece of art, a Northwest Coast Shaman's rattle, at an antique shop in N.Y.C. in the mid-1940s. Objects in expo & cat.: "Masterpieces of African Art." The Brooklyn Museum , New York 21 October, 1954 - 2 January, 1955.
