A janus Chamba statueComing from John's Dintenfass collection. 33 cm.
chamba Dintenfass information request of availability- send email The Chamba are from the Nigeria/Cameroon borderlands, and often misattributed to their neighbors the Mumuye. This piece is from the Upper Benue River Valley in Nigeria. The two bodies in a different color with a minimum of detail and a crest ; arms are fixed on the torso, finelly carved arms and hand, traces of offerings - blood, chicken feathers. compare with this Chamba:
Although this figure conforms to these stylistic attributes, its lack of collection history does not allow us to determine its past use. According to research, figures like this represented heroes and former chiefs; they also may have denoted ancestors or other spiritual powers and in the past may have been used to combat illness. Insect damage and weather have eroded the surface of this figure.
My Chamba statue has clear signs of aging. This type of statue represent usually ancestor and the offering where brought during ceremonies to combat illness.

Some insect damage at the feet make us think it was probably
partly in the ground to make the statue stand up.
The Chamba are just on the border between Nigeria and Cameroon near the Mumuye and Mambila. (map found at uiowa.edu )
This nice Chamba (click link to email me) with a good provenance (John Dintenfass) is priced at 4.200 euros chamba Dintenfass information request of availability- send email
