The
Dan peoples live in a primarily forested area of the Ivory Coast and Liberia,
and forest spirits play an important role in village life.
Initiation
rites take place in a sacred place in the forest, with the Poro mask used to
embody the bird forest spirits.
The surface has a good patina and there are
remains of some applied material like Tokula powder on the top of the mask
around the metallic eyes and some nails .
It measures 14cm 5.5" wide by 27cm
10,6" high, dates to the first half 20th century and has a custom
mount.

A priest of the Poro Society wears this mask, which represents
the spirit of a bird . When the priest puts this Dan
mask on, he is possessed by the bird's spirit. Disputes are settled using
the powers of this mask, and the priest takes on a bird's personality. The final
decision, which cannot be disputed, is considered to be the final judgment of
the spirit.

Serving Ancestors
Rituals, often nocturnal, by members of secret societies wearing
ancestor and animal masks are reminders of the ancient sanction of their
conduct. In many cultures, these masked ceremonials are intended to prevent
misbehavior and to maintain the activities of the tribe.
