Janus figure
A little Dogon Janus figure early XXth century. I
found it in a small Dutch collection with many quality pieces.
Dogon Janus figure

height: 26 cm
price :
SOLD
condition:
worn patina wood with traces of blood offerings, cracks and some parts missing
in the blood crust
The
two sides have a male face with a beard but one of the two sides has also
breast.
This
refers to the ancestral incest and Dogon mythology.
This
statue probably represent Amma's first deity androgynous twin.
"The
impression is that men feel a certain veiled regret for having to go through
woman in order to reproduce and that they fantasize about a pure worldinhabited
by men alone"
According to Geneviève Calame Griaule (in Words and
the Dogon Words) there is an ambiguity between male and female in the Dogon
culture, woman are considered as having "unstable natures", but male
attitude bonds with the fox and the female.
