condition: varnished by a colonial a long time ago, nose flattened.
The Ganguela were divided into two territories: one in the eastern frontier
and the other north, up the river Cubango.
Their main economic activities are agriculture, animal husbandry, lake
fishing and beekeeping.
The most famous Ganguela sub-group is the Luena - ancient Lunda -Quiocos (Tchokwe)
that adopted the Ganguelas' language and were culturally influenced by Zimbabwe.
They excelled in the art of iron fusion.
Their ceramics, black polished and artistically modelled, are prized crafts,
even to this day. They are also known for their masks.
Regarding social practices, they have masculine rites of passage.
Some ethnologists believe that the Ganguelas are the oldest Bantu people in
the country.
Ganguela statues are quite rare, this is the first I see in ten years. You
can see the Lwena influence. I like the light two colored wood. The piece is
shiny due to some old varnish put on it. It is possible to remove it, but I
preferred to keep it as is.
I guess this piece is from before WWII, it has clear signs of age.
