provenance: John Dintenfass -William Brill
Coming
from the Dintenfass collection, who got it himself from Wlliam Brill this very nice old Hemba magician necklace with
two fine carved heads (one male and one Janus) is something you don't see so
often. The female head is from the Janus type, the other pieces of wood symbols
of jaguar teeth .
The
Hemba recognize a creator god (vidiye mukulu) and a supreme being (shimugabo).
Worship is primarily carried out through sacrifices and offerings to ancestor
shrines.
Diviners
play an important role in society, often requiring that certain ancestors be
appeased in order to establish balance in the community. This was a necklace
from one of these diviners.
