Iatmul of the Middle Sepik region.
History:The Yatmul area was discovered in March 1938 by Margaret Mead and Gregory Bateson
Silver-gelatin print. Gregory
Bateson. Kankanamun, Middle Sepik, Papua New
Guinea, 1932. P.16615.BAT.
Scene from an Iatmul initiation
described in Gregory Bateson's book Naven. "The initiators are waiting in
two lines armed with sticks. The novice will enter through the leaf screen at
the back of the picture and will run the gauntlet of the initiators. Actually,
the novice's father will come with him and will protect the back of the novice,
allowing blows to fall on his own back. This beating of the father is analogous
to a beating of the novice, since both are of the same initiatory moiety"
(1957: pl. IX).

These basket hooks, also called suspension or food hook, where used to
suspend the food so that the rats couldn't reach it. Food was placed in baskets
or string bags (bilums) and hung to the basket hooks.
