Ibibio Anang, Nigeria, West Africa. Seat doll with movable arms; this doll type represents the anticipated idealistic beauty of the first child of the doll's owner. Young Ibibio girls before initiation into adulthood, are put into seclusion, taught feminine roles and encouraged to gain weight to become more attractive as a bride and mother-to-be (See some pictures in situ Nigeria Ibibio photos ) Articulated arms, classic hair style, traditional form of concentric circular
rings at waist, beautiful naturalistic features, brown and black
coloration. Used into dances this puppet is quite unusual since it represent a
seated girl, the positive attitude is enhanced by regularity and harmony in face
expression and carving. Some details like the crest on the head or the armlets
enhance feminity and majesty of this statue. |
