A very cubistic Kifwebe maskAn old pre-1940 Kifwebe mask coming from Nicolas De Kun who was in Congo between 1948 and 1960. This Kifwebe mask was sold by him to Will Hoogstraate who's a Dutch collector in the Netherlands and who was also interested in contemporay paintings. According to the Who is Who in African Art from Guy van Rijn this collection was sold at Sotheby's London. 3 July, 1961 & Gros-Delettrez, Drouot-Paris May 1983. de Kun, Nicolas Scholar, geologist/field collector. Collected Lega objects in the congo between 1948 and 1960. Author: L'Art Lega, Africa-Tervuren 12,nos.3-4, 1966. Sold many Lega objects in Sotheby's-London: 20 November, 1961. Kifwebe mask from the Nicolas De Kun collectionThis fine and quite abstract Kifwebe mask is 16,5 inches or 42 cm high . Very abstract figuration of the eyes, remains of hair in the holes on the crest. Fine Kaolin patina, some part of the wood beeing burned to darken them. Clear signs of aging, old patina, light wood. I love this mask and think it is a very old one. Smaller than those you see regularly on the market and that are from the 1950's, this one is smaller and probably to be dated from the 1930's It can become part of your collection for 3,500 euros Kifwebe mask De Kun information request of availability or comment - send email
