Kpele mask

A delicate and classic Kpele mask in wood. Size: 33 cm without the stand ( stand is included in the lot)

Provenance: Alex Arthur, Brussels.

Size 33 cm.

Probable age: early to mid XX th century

condition: Black patina, a chip at one of the horns, and a reparation at the other.

The kpelie face mask is used in ancestor (kpelie) rituals by the Poro, or Lo, secret sociey of the Senufo peoples.

The projections at the top of this mask represent the horns of a bull, while the lateral projections at the sides refer to the stylized hair arrangements traditional hairstyles of Senufo mothers.

The "legs" at the bottom of the mask serve to connect it to the earth.

Kpelie Masks were used not only in initiation rituals, but also in agricultural ceremonies and funerary rites.

Although mainly worn by men, the kpelie represents female perfection and is used to depict the great mother, the ancestor of all and the giver of life, according to Poro philosophy. Kpelie masks are worn by members of Poro society in public and danced during  secret performances and funerals.
