Learn more about the Kuba tribe, read these books:

The Children of Woot : A History of the Kuba Peoples (Hardcover) Author: Jan Vansina;

On the trail of the Bushongo; An account of a remarkable & hitherto unknown African people Author: Emil Torday;

Royal Kuba masquerades. Nshing Kasai Congo 1909

This mask, with its bulging forehead, represents Bwoom, the son of the great God, Woot. Bwoom was sent to Earth by his father to establish the Kuba dynasty. He was accompanied by his sister Ngaady aMwaash, and his brother Mwaash aMbooy (the King; see image) with whom he struggles with for power. Bwoom seeks both his brother's throne and wife, Ngaady aMwaash. Bwoom also symbolically speaks for the common man.

According to the royal history this mask represent the brother of the king who became mad because he killed the king's nephew, the white line above the eyes (on this mask woven with glas beads beeing proof)

This mask also always has a big noise, and the dancer could look through the nose holes when dancing.

The Kuba Kingdom was founded in the 16th century by the Bushoong people, and still have a king alive (I think it is the twenty first).

The Bushoong kings live in a palace known as Mushenge. Each clan pay a tribute to the Nyim king and in echange the king is responsible for weath and fecondity.
