A
quite recent but beautiful big Lobi statue from the
western region of Burkina Faso (formerly Upper Volta).
Lobi people are speaking a Gur language of the
Niger-Congo family.
They are farmers and hunters, growing millet and
sorghum as staples. Traditionally, the Lobi governed themselves through the clan
system, with no formal political organization.

statue sold 03.00.05.06
Provenance: French collection.
The Lobi figures (bateba) are recognized as living beings, which are placed
on the shrines of Thila and are able to communicate with one another and to
fight off witches.
This quite big Lobi piece has not really traces of offers or age, but it is
one of the most expressive Lobi statues I have had. The carving is very
sensitive and the head is slightly bended. It is sold with a stand.
