Add Luba stool to Cart - request of availability Dick Broer commented on a similar object on 2007/07/11: The Luba kingdom expanded in the area of Kabalo under the reign of king Kumwimbe Ngombe (1810-1840). This caryatid stool, by its patina and style, can be dated to the first half of the xxth century. It demonstrates, through a high level of artistic achievement, the refinement of a chief from the Kabalo region, at the mouth of the Kukuga river. ( see Sotheby's, Helen & Robert Kuhn auction 1991 for a quite similar looking piece ) A female figure called a caryatid supports the seat of this carved wooden stool. The Luba people use caryatid stools during a ceremony giving power to a new king. The female figure represents important ancestors of the king. Provenance: This stool was bought in the early 1970's in gallery ABC in Knokke, Belgium by a private collector. Price: sold - click thumbs to enlarge.
