The big figure is of a 'great' Female ancestor, portrait of a marriageable
girl.
Probable age : 1940's-50's
The Makonde body scarification are far more elaborate than those of other
indigenous tribes of southern Tanzania and northern Mozambique.
It is said that these women with scarification became god-like figures
after death.
The scarification covers the forehead and the areas above the mouth and across
the cheeks. The lizards on the sides of the stomach are believed to enhance
fertility in women.

This Map below date from 1929 and shows the area of East Africa
in the Tanganika area. The statue could also come from Mozambique.

The Makonde are a Bantu-speaking tribe, and,
as far as is known, have no admixture of foreign blood, except when they capture
neighboring tribes woman and children.
It is quite seldom to find statues from that area, usually you
find only masks.
