Cameroon pieces are more and more in demand. The Mambila
figure is from Dr. Peter Westerdijk collection author of The
African throwing knife
At €2.700 this is a real bargain, just check out the price
of this other Mambila
sold at Christies in 1997 from the Franklin collection and from the same
size and related quality.
Standing
with the hands raised to the chin, the upper arms carved free of the body, the
concave heart-shaped face with conical eyes, the carved open mouth with notched
teeth, the face bordered with band of inset wooden pegs
A double band of inset wooden pegs forming a median crest on
the domed head, on short stylized angular legs, rectangular cavity to one side
of the abdomen, dark encrusted patina
Northern's comments on the Franklin figure (1986, p.27) apply equally to the
present sculpture: "Mambila sculpture at its best expresses intensity and
controlled force. This figure is one such example and illustrates the recurrent
features of Mambila figures: a heart-shaped face, detailed with small wooden
pegs outlining its delicate shape, and the spring-like contained energy about to
be released throughout by the rhythmically bent arms and legs."
Keith
Nicklin (in Africa
Tom Phillips,, 1995, p.360) states: "the gesture of the left hand or both
hands to chin in Mambila sculpture is characteristic of tadep figures
connected with a healing association called Suaga.

A secret about this piece is that there are waves in the wood that made me able
to recognize it's authenticity . When wood gets old the water in the Mambila
wood dissapeared creating the waves in the wood. Also you can see they used
wooden plugs into the head, also a good sign of authenticity .
