Mambila(Cameroun)

Cameroon country figure from the Mambila peoples, 20th century. Collected by Dr. Peter Westerdijk in the early 70's.

the figure is stimulating and quite harmonious with a strong expression , and clear signs of aging, 'see the wood pattern rings) , and creating an interesting pattern on the face of this impressive Mambila statue in light wood, carved open mouth with notched wood teeth, bulging eyes, and one row of wooden pegs around the head.

Northern's comments on the Franklin figure (1986, p.27) apply equally to the present sculpture: "Mambila sculpture at its best expresses intensity and controlled force. This figure is one such example and illustrates the recurrent features of Mambila figures: a heart-shaped face, detailed with small wooden pegs outlining its delicate shape, and the spring-like contained energy about to be released throughout by the rhythmically bent arms and legs."

Keith Nicklin (in Africa Tom Phillips,, 1995, p.360) states: "the gesture of the left hand or both hands to chin in Mambila sculpture is characteristic of tadep figures connected with a healing association called Suaga.

A secret about this piece is that there are waves in the wood that made me able to recognize it's authenticity . When wood gets old the water in the Mambila wood dissapeared creating the waves in the wood. Also you can see they used wooden plugs into the head, also a good sign of authenticity .
