Mangbetu Zande statue
Figures of the Mangbetu are rare. They appear
individual or in pairs and can be looked upon as representations of ancestors.
The shape of the coiffure reflects the lengthened skull which corresponds to the
current ideal of beauty the Mangbetu aristocracy always had. (David Zemanek,
2009)
The older figures usually don't have the
elongated heads, like this one that was aleady collected between 1910 and 1930,
and published in 1933.
Provenance: Alex van Opstal was in David
Norden's collection (sold)
