Most Mbole figurative sculpture represents individuals who have been hanged for violating the laws of society. Wooden statues characteristically have sunken faces and concave torsos

Figures like this serve at the Lilwa(= Leopard) society, and are carried during the initiation ceremonies and represent the hanged men as warning to the novices not to disclose the secrets of the society.
