The Pende sickness mask falls into the category of mbuya masks, which are used to represent different characters. This one, mbangu, represents a cursed man, someone who has been struck by sickness or has had deformities cast upon him by sorcerers.Deformity mask.

This mask is used to represent illness in the tribe and is danced to counteract or prevent illness. This is a real old one, just look at the back.

The mbangu sickness mask  represent a hunter stricken with facial paralysis and is used during celebrations together with other masks from the Pende tribe in Congo.

It demonstrates that even someone important can get ill and gives a lesson about disease and moral values. In this case, the Pende believe facial paralysis is the result of sorcery, or that someone  jealous inflicted disease.   This mask also teaches rewards of good behavior against those who are morally flawed.
