Originally it was believed to be representing a pig mask, but
scholarly studies showed this is not true.
Kipoko is the most popular of the Pende chief's masks danced during the Lukongo ceremony; and it affects the community's health and welfare. In contrast to the fearsome Pumbu mask, the Kipoko signifies the chief's protective and nurturing powers and is danced during the chiefs investiture by young boys who also want to become chiefs later. The mask's large eyes, ears, and nose signify the chief's ability to see and hear everything and to "smell out" sorcerers in his community. The diminutive size of the mouth conveys the idea that the chief should be slow to speak, choose his words carefully, lest hasty words create difficulties for him. Healing is an important function of the Kipoko's performance, and people come forward and kneel before the dancer to be healed of their troubles.
The Kipoko mask symbolizes the power of the ancestors, and
embodying the ruler in its performances, belongs to the regalia of Pende chiefs
and is kept ih their residence. Kipoko
is considered a friendly mask figure and portrays the positive aspects of the
chief.
The enlarge ears, nose and eyes appeal to his watchfulness,
ensuring that he is aware of everything that is transpiring in village life.
The dancing of the kipoko
mask thanks the ancestors for their good deeds and to continue supporting the
community.
