Pende sickness masks

Where does it come from? From Congo, the previous Belgian colony.

How old is it? Seen the patina and style I would say early XXth century, probably around 1930.

Who is it depicting? Facial paralysis.

What is it called? Mbangu

The mbangu sickness mask  represent a hunter stricken with facial paralysis and is used during celebrations together with other masks from the Pende tribe in Congo.

What is it used for? To dance during ceremonies and telling stories.

It demonstrates that even someone important can get ill and gives a lesson about disease and moral values. In this case, the Pende believe facial paralysis is the result of sorcery, or that someone  jealous inflicted disease.   This mask also teaches rewards of good behavior against those who are morally flawed.

What is the price of this early XXth Pende Sickness mask from Peter Westerdijk's collection. Price: 2,700 €

This strange &  finely carved mask is coming from Peter Westerdijk's .

The strange nose and mouth, finely carved and with a good old patina, a fine line on the nose, half of the face is black, the other black and is expression quite strong emotions.
