Lukwakongo maskette. Lega. Kivu, Zaïre. Wood, pigments, fibre.

Provenance: Peter Westerdijk. Collected before 1952, probable age 1920's.

Height: 17 cm

lega masketteWood, mineral powders like clay and Kaolin (to give a white colour).

This small masquette was used during the Bwami initiation rituals. The Lega sculptor's aim was to depict a person's psychological and moral characteristics rather than provide a portrait.
