A Songye Horn in Gazelle tusk SOLD
This rather mysterious object, a gazelle tusk, covered with wood sticks and fur crowned in its open end by a magnificently rendered head, carved in the Songye style, remains enigmatic owing to the scarcity of documented comparative examples. The example is the most compelling and visually interesting of the known corpus. The finely detailed head and the vestigial "body" of the tusk, although in direct opposition, are unified in a single, bold creation. The little horn in the back is a calabash fragment. This Songye horn shows traces of blood offerings. The artistic wares of the Songye, including pottery made by women and weaving and metalworking done by men, were traded extensively with their neighbors. They were recognized as superior craftsmen, and their products were in great demand. The creator god of the Songye is Efile, although sacrifices are not made directly to him. Much attention is focused on familial ancestors, to whom sacrifices are made to encourage the well-being of the individual and the family.
